Board Candidate
Lead Where You Live.
Are you a dedicated member, ready to help shape the future of your credit union?
MHV’s Board of Directors is made up of members. The Board acts in the best interests of all members and sets the credit union's strategic direction, governance, and oversight.
Apply by November 18.
Member-Owned Means Member-Led
MHV is owned by its members. That means the people who set its direction are members too.
Each year, seats on the Board of Directors come up for election, and members can seek nomination. The Board sets strategy, safeguards the credit union’s strength, and keeps members at the center of every decision. If you have ever wondered how a credit union makes its choices, this is where those choices happen.
You do not need to know everything about credit unions to contribute. What matters is a willingness to learn, think strategically, work with others, and commit to MHV and the people it serves.
Apply by November 18.
What the Board does
The Board of Directors acts in the best interests of all members and sets the credit union's strategic direction, governance, and oversight. Directors govern. They do not manage day-to-day operations.
Directors:
-
Set strategic direction and oversee MHV’s financial health, risk profile, and performance.
-
Select, support, and evaluate the President and CEO.
-
Review and approve major policies, strategic plans, and annual budgets.
-
Oversee risk management and regulatory compliance.
-
Act in the best interests of the entire membership.
-
Keep member, employee, and organizational information confidential.
The Board acts as a group. No individual director directs employees or runs any part of the credit union.
Terms and the time commitment
3-year term
Each director serves a three-year term. Terms are staggered, so several seats come up for election each year.
Regular meetings
One Board meeting and one assigned committee meeting per month.
Annual planning sessions
Every spring and fall, our board comes together with our executive team to plan for the future.
Continuing Education
Required and recommended director education to deepen your expertise in how our credit union operates, to understand compliance, and to stay current with the industry.
Staying involved
Occasional special meetings and community events.
Monthly commitment
Most directors spend about 5 hours a month, plus planning sessions.

To participate as a volunteer, you need to meet all of the following eligibility requirements
-
Be a member of the Credit Union in good standing.
-
Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

What the Board is looking for
Each Director serves for a 3-year term, and each year, candidates are nominated for open positions. To be considered as a candidate, you should have relevant experience across a broad range of competencies necessary to be a Board member. These may include:
-
Fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interest of the entire membership.

Demonstrate financial literacy to interpret financial statements, key metrics, ratios, and budgets.
-
Demonstrate awareness of financial risks and the regulatory environment; commit to understanding credit union internal controls.
-
Ability to understand industry trends and contribute to strategic planning, while providing governance rather than operational management.
-
Possess an understanding of technology governance, cybersecurity, and/or digital banking.
-
Ability to evaluate executive performance, understand executive compensation plans, incentives, and succession planning.
The Board also looks at itself as a whole. Community ties, geographic representation, professional background, legal experience, and a different way of thinking all matter. If you are unsure whether your experience fits, apply anyway and let the Committee assess.
Take the next step. Help shape the future of MHV.
If you are ready to volunteer and have the background and experience needed to be considered for nomination, you must submit the following to the nominating committee no later than November 18th. Download the application packet to get started.
