Spoofing, phishing, vishing, smishing — from computer takeovers to gift cards, here are the most common scams and how to protect yourself.

The most common scams today
Phishing
Fraudulent emails that appear legitimate, trying to trick you into sharing passwords, account numbers, or personal details.
Vishing
Voice phishing — scam phone calls impersonating your bank, the IRS, or tech support to pressure you into sharing information.
Smishing
Phishing by text message, often with a link or a request to "confirm" account details. MHV never texts links.
Spoofing
Faking a caller ID or sender so a call, text, or email appears to come from a trusted number — even ours.
Gift Card Scams
Requests to pay a bill, fine, or fee with gift cards. No legitimate business or agency asks to be paid this way.
Computer Takeover
Fake "tech support" pop-ups or calls that convince you to grant remote access to your device and accounts.
Romance Scams
A new online "relationship" that eventually asks for money, gift cards, or help moving funds. Never send money to someone you haven't met.
Job & Check Scams
"Jobs" that send you a check to deposit and ask you to wire part back. The check bounces and you're left owing the funds.
